Tropical Storm ‘Lannie’ to enter PAR this week

Two weather disturbances are being monitored by PAGASA.

These include a Tropical Storm with international name “Talim” that may enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) by Monday or Tuesday. As of 3:00 AM, it was located 1,885 kilometers east of Luzon with maximum sustained winds of 65 kilometers per hour (kph) and gustiness of 80 kph, moving west-northwest at 25 kph. In an interview with PAGASA Weather Forecaster Robert Badrina, he said that the cyclone will be named “Lannie” when it enters PAR and may bring rains to areas in Extreme Northern Luzon.

Although “Talim” has no direct effect to the country yet, a Low Pressure Area (LPA) within PAR is bringing rains in some areas.

At 3:00 AM, the LPA was estimated at 745 kilometers northeast of Borongan City, Eastern Samar. Its chance of developing into a Tropical Cyclone remains low, said Badrina.

Today, Visayas, Palawan, Bicol Region, Northern Mindanao and Caraga will have cloudy skies with light to moderate rains and thunderstorms due to the extension of the LPA. The rest of the country will have fair weather condition except for isolated rain showers.

“Kiko” brings Signal #1

Tropical Depression “Kiko” maintains its strength and is now traversing the Balintang Channel.

At 4:00 AM today, the center of the weather disturbance was estimated at 95 kilometers west of Basco, Batanes. It has maximum sustained winds of 55 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 65 kph, moving northwest at 20 kph. According to PAGASA Weather Forecaster Meno Mendoza, the Tropical Depression is expected to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) tonight. Still, Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal number 1 (TCWS) is hoisted in Batanes and the Babuyan Group of Islands.

Areas under TCWS will experience rains with gusty winds, making flash floods and landslides possible. Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur will have with light to moderate rains with thunderstorms, while the rest of the country including Metro Manila will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers.

“Kiko”, the 11th tropical cyclone that developed within the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) and the first for the month of September, was last located at 345 kilometers east of Casiguran, Aurora. Classified as a Tropical Depression, it has maximum sustained winds of 55 kilometers per hour (kph) and gustiness of 65 kph.

Moving west-northwest at 15 kph, Kiko is expected to cross Extreme Northern Luzon tomorrow morning and may exit the PAR by evening. As of 8:00 AM today, Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal Number 1 is still up over Cagayan, Ilocos Norte, Apayao, Batanes and the Babuyan Group of Islands.

Due to the Tropical Depression, Cagayan, Ilocos Norte, Apayao, Batanes and the Babuyan Group of Islands will experience rains with gusty winds. Cloudy skies with moderate to occasionally heavy rains with thunderstorms will affect Isabela, Quirino, Aurora, Abra and Kalinga.

Meanwhile, Metro Manila, the rest of Luzon and Western Visayas will have cloudy skies with light to moderate rains and possible thunderstorms. Partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers will prevail in the rest of the archipelago.

PAGASA did not issue a gale warning but noted that sea travel is risky int he eastern seaboard of Northern and Central Luzon. Coastal waters in these areas will be moderate to rough.

According to PAGASA Weather Forecaster Meno Mendoza, the prevailing weather systems expected this month include Tropical Cyclones, the Low Pressure Area (LPA) and Hanging Habagat. These will bring rains and thunderstorms in the affected areas.

Mendoza added that the ridge of High Pressure Area (HPA) may also affect the country, mostly during the absence of a weather disturbance. This will bring fair weather with a very slim chance of rain.

Based on the 11AM advisory of PAGASA, the Low Pressure Area (LPA) was last located at 725 km east of Baler, Aurora. It is expected to bring cloudy skies with light to moderate rains and thunderstorms over Bicol Region and the provinces of Cagayan, Isabela, Aurora, Quezon and Samar. The rest of the country will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or localized thunderstorms.

According to PAGASA Weather Forecaster Nikos Peñaranda, this weather disturbance still has a chance of developing into a tropical depression within 48 hours and may hit the Extreme Northern Luzon.

Question of the Day
One of Panahon TV followers asked, “Ano po ‘yung hail?” PAGASA Weather Forecaster Gener Quitlong explains that it usually happens during thunderstorms. Hail storms are not very common in a tropical country like the Philippines but when thunderstorms get severe, chances of hail or droplets of ice are possible. Know more about it:

The Southwest Monsoon, locally known as Hanging Habagat, prevails as the dominant weather system but will only affect the western section of Northern Luzon. In the next hours, cloudy skies with light to moderate rains and thunderstorms will be experienced in Ilocos Region. The rest of the country including Metro Manila will have generally fair weather condition but localized thunderstorms are still possible in the afternoon or evening.

Meanwhile, no gale warning was issued today but fisherfolk are still advised to be alert in venturing out into the seaboards of Luzon, where moderate to rough seas are expected. Coastal waters in the remaining parts of the archipelago will be slight to moderate.

In an interview with Panahon TV, PAGASA Weather Forecaster Chris Perez said a cloud cluster is being monitored outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR). It has a slim chance of developing into a Low Pressure Area (LPA) within the next 24 hours but the public is advised to keep monitoring updates and further development.

Perez added that we are already approaching the transition period, where winds shift from Southwest (Habagat) to Northwest (Amihan). Once the Amihan becomes dominant, it will bring slightly cooler weather mostly in Northern Luzon. However, temperatures may not drop to the lowest range yet because the peak of Amihan usually happens during January to February.
