MARCH 3

As the Northeast Monsoon or Amihan prevails, affecting Northern and Central Luzon, light rains will be experienced in the regions of Cagayan, Ilocos, Cordillera and Central Luzon. Meanwhile, the Tail-End of a Cold Front will bring light to moderate rains over Bicol and Eastern Visayas, and the provinces of Quezon, Romblon and Marinduque. In the rest of our country, including Metro Manila, generally fair weather condition with a chance of localized thunderstorms is expected.

According to PAGASA, this week, including the weekend, is so far, weather disturbance-free. Updates on this will be given regularly.

Meanwhile, because of the surge of the Amihan, gale warning was raised in the eastern seaboards of Central and Southern Luzon. It will be bringing rough to very rough sea conditions with wave height up to 3.4 to 4.5 meters, enough to overturn fishing boats and other small seacraft.

Light rains will also be experienced in the regions of Cagayan Valley, Ilocos, Cordillera, and the rest of Central Luzon. In the next hours, fair weather is expected in the rest of the country, including Metro Manila.

Due to the winds associated with the Amihan, gale warning was raised in the seaboards of Northern Luzon, and eastern seaboards of Central and Southern Luzon, and Visayas. Fisherfolk with small seacraft should avoid venturing into the said seaboards due to the rough to very rough sea conditions.

According to PAGASA Weather Forecaster Aldczar Aurelio, the Hot and Dry Season usually begins in March and ends in May, but since the Amihan is still present in our country, this season will be put on hold for a bit. However, Aurelio added that the Amihan will slightly weaken this weekend.

February is already here! Before you plan your surprises for your loved ones, checking the weather first is an absolute must. Here are the top three things you need to know about this month’s weather:

1. No goodbyes for Amihan yet.

Slightly colder weather will prevail in some parts of Luzon as the Northeast Monsoon, locally known as Amihan is expected to continue its peak. The surge of these winds usually occurs during January to February each year.

In history, the coldest day in February was experienced in Baguio City wherein a chilling 6.7 degrees Celsius was recorded on February 1, 1963.

However, due to the strong El Niño, the effect of Amihan this year may not be as dominant as the previous years.

Aside from lower temperatures, light rains may also occur, mostly in the northern provinces. Meanwhile, for small seacraft, venturing out into the sea may also be risky as strong to gale force winds associated with the Amihan may still be experienced.

2. Missing the rain

Based on the rainfall outlook, most parts of the Luzon, entire Visayas and several areas in Mindanao could receive a way-below normal amount of rain this month.

Dry conditions, dry spells and droughts are expected to prevail. These are the main challenges the agricultural sector faces.

3. There’s still a chance… for a weather disturbance.

Despite the occurring El Niño, our country is still not safe from a Tropical Cyclone or “bagyo”. PAGASA says that an average of 0 to 1 Tropical Cyclone may develop within or enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) this February.

Other weather systems expected to affect the country include the Northeast Monsoon, Tail End of a Cold Front, Low Pressure Area, Ridge of High Pressure Area, and Trough of Low Pressure Area.

Did you feel the chill these past few days? It’s all because of the Northeast Monsoon, locally known as Amihan, which continues to affect several parts of the country. Amihan is characterized by cold and dry air mass coming from Mainland China or Siberia.

For some, it may be a little confusing why we’re feeling the cold weather only after the Holiday Season. Amihan usually affects the country during the “ber” months, but it reaches its peak in January or February, wherein temperatures usually drop.

Based on history, Baguio City has always experienced most of the coldest days. The temperature even dropped to 6.3 degrees Celsius

This year, PAGASA recorded 10.8 degrees Celsius in Baguio City last January 26. The state weather bureau says so far, this has been the lowest temperature for this year.

Philippine Weather Forecast: Slightly Cold and rainy

Due to the surge of the Amihan, rains will be more concentrated in Visayas and CARAGA, where cloudy skies with moderate to occasionally heavy rains will be experienced. Residents of the said areas must prepare against possible flashfloods and landslides.

Meanwhile, light rains will prevail over the regions of Cordillera, Cagayan Valley, Bicol Region, provinces of Aurora, Rizal and Quezon. Isolated light rains may also occur in Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon. The rest of Mindanao can still enjoy generally fair weather, aside from possible isolated rain showers or thunderstorms.

Meanwhile, gale warning is up over the eastern seaboards of Northern and Central Luzon, the eastern and southern seaboards of Southern Luzon, and the eastern and western seaboards of Visayas. In line with this, the Philippine Coast Guard stated in its update that as of 8 AM today, a total of 297 passengers, 6 vessels and 22 motorized bancas were stranded in different ports in the country because of the gale warning.
