Two weather systems will dump rains this weekend.

These include a Low Pressure Area (LPA) inside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) and the Southwest Monsoon affecting the western sections of Southern Luzon and Visayas.

At 3:00 AM today, the LPA was spotted at 40 kilometers north-northeast of Alabat, Quezon. PAGASA Weather Forecaster Samuel Duran said, the possibility that the LPA would develop into a tropical cyclone remains slim but it will still dampen Luzon as it approaches the landmass.

Today, areas in Luzon and Western Visayas will have cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms due to the LPA. These rains may trigger flash floods and landslides. Meanwhile, the remaining parts of Visayas and Mindanao will experience a generally fair weather except for chances of localized thunderstorms.

ITCZ dampens Southern Mindanao

Lightning, occasionally heavy rains, strong winds and flash floods are possible in Southern Mindanao as the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) affects the region today.

The ITCZ is an area where winds coming from the Northern and Southern Hemispheres meet; this interaction results in rains in the affected areas. ITCZ is also composed of a series of Low Pressure Areas (LPA) which can develop into weather disturbances.

As this weather system prevails, the Zamboanga Peninsula, SOCSKSARGEN, ARMM and Davao Region will experience cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms. The rest of Mindanao, all the way up to Visayas and Luzon will have generally fair weather except for chances of localized thunderstorms.

In an interview with PAGASA Weather Forecaster Chris Perez, he mentioned that no weather disturbance affects the country today but a cloud cluster is being monitored outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR).

Jolina exits PAR; weather improves

Tropical Storm Jolina has left the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR).
From a Low Pressure Area (LPA), the weather disturbance intensified into a Tropical
Depression Thursday afternoon and made landfall in Casiguran, Aurora Friday evening. At 5:00 AM today, the storm with international name “Pakhar” was located at 595 kilometers northwest of Laoag City, Ilocos Norte and continues to move westward to China.

With the absence of Jolina, weather condition is expected to improve except in areas where the Southwest Monsoon prevails. Today, the Ilocos Region, Zambales, Bataan, and Pampanga will experience cloudy skies with light to moderate rains and possible thunderstorms. The rest of Luzon, including Metro Manila, will have generally fair weather except for isolated rain showers or thunderstorms.

Another Weather Disturbance

In an interview with Panahon TV, PAGASA Weather Forecaster Chris Perez said that a potential weather disturbance is being monitored in the eastern section of the West Philippine Sea. If the cloud clusters would develop into a tropical cyclone, it will not enter PAR but may boost the Southwest Monsoon.

Based on climatological records, an average of two to four tropical cyclones can develop or enter PAR in August.

Rains in Soccsksargen areas

The Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) continues to bring rains to some areas in Southern Mindanao.

This Saturday, portions of the Soccsksargen Region, including Sarangani and South Cotabato should still brace for light to moderate rains. Meanwhile, in the rest of Mindanao, a generally fair weather will be experienced. Partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms will prevail in Luzon and Visayas.

In an interview with PAGASA Weather Forecaster Obet Badrina, he mentioned that no tropical cyclone is expected to affect the country this weekend.

Typhoon and Flood Awareness Week 2017
Meanwhile, to further strengthen the nation’s readiness for tropical cyclones and their possible effects, the Typhoon and Flood Awareness Week 2017 was officially launched.

In a press conference held in Quezon City yesterday, Dr. Esperanza O. Cayanan, the chief of PAGASA Weather Division, highlighted that the bureau will now use “impact-based” information dissemination instead of focusing on the figures and data.

Nine to 14 tropical cyclones are expected to enter or develop within the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) until November this year.

After dumping rains in some parts of Caraga, Davao Region and Palawan, the Low Pressure Area (LPA) inside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) has already weakened and dissipated.

However, PAGASA Weather Forecaster Glaiza Escullar said that the Tail-End of a Cold Front remains dominant in the eastern section of Northern Luzon.

More than 80 candidates from all over the world are in the Philippines as the country is hosting the Miss Universe competition for the third time. The country first hosted the competition in 1974 when Spain’s Amparo Muñoz was crowned while the second happened in 1994 with Sushmita Sen of India winning as Miss Universe.

Just last year, our candidate Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach was crowned Miss Universe.

Two weather systems are still bringing rains in the country today.

Gale force winds are affecting more areas in the country as the Amihan intensifies. Due to rough to very rough seas, small seacraft and fishing boats are not advised to venture out, while larger sea vessels are alerted against big waves.

According to PAGASA, two weather systems still prevail in the Philippine Area of Responsibility today. As the Tail-End of a Cold Front affects the eastern section of Southern Luzon, the Northeast Monsoon or Amihan dominates Northern and Central Luzon.

The Cold Front is an area in the atmosphere where masses of warm and cold air converge, resulting in thunderstorms. Ordinarily, the axis of the Cold Front is in level with Taiwan or Japan. The only part that affects the Philippines is its tail end or extension. The Amihan, characterized by cold and dry air coming from Mainland China, is responsible for lower temperatures.

Annually, on the second Sunday of May, countries across the world honor mothers.

As you go about celebrating this special day, you and your mom can enjoy generally fair weather in the country.

According to PAGASA Weather Forecaster Meno Mendoza, the Ridge of High Pressure continues to dominate Northern and Central Luzon, while Easterlies prevail over the eastern section of Southern Luzon, as well as Visayas and Mindanao.

Ridge is an extension of a weather system associated with good weather conditions. High Pressure Area refers to the planet’s surface with a greater atmospheric region compared to its surrounding environment. It is also an anti-cyclone and causes warm and fair weather. On the other hand, Easterlies refer to warm and humid air coming from the Pacific Ocean, and can cause isolated rain showers or thunderstorms.

This Sunday, partly cloudy to cloudy skies and warm weather will prevail in Metro Manila and the rest of the country. However, there is still a chance of isolated rains in the latter part of the day when clouds precipitate after accumulating enough water during the warm days.

So, if you’re planning to take your mom to the park, mall, spa or movie house, make sure to hydrate properly. Also bring umbrellas in case it rains.
