A possible tropical cyclone was spotted outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR).

Based on PAGASA’s 5:00 AM Weather Forecast, the Low Pressure Area (PAR) was spotted east of Mindanao.

In an interview with Panahon TV, Weather Forecaster Samuel Duran said that the LPA may enter PAR today and may develop into a tropical cyclone. The weather disturbance may cross areas in the Visayas and Mindanao.

Due to the advancing clouds or trough of the LPA, the Davao Region and Soccsksargen will have cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms. As the Northeast Monsoon prevails in the Northern Luzon, the regions of Ilocos, Cordillera and Cagayan Valley will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light rains. In the rest of the country including Metro Manila, partly cloudy to cloudy skies will be experienced with isolated rain showers.

The Low Pressure Area (LPA) in Palawan has dissipated, leaving the Northeast Monsoon or Amihan as the dominant weather system in the Extreme Northern Luzon.

The Northeast Monsoon, locally known as Amihan, is characterized by cold and dry air coming from mainland China or Siberia. During this season, a generally fair weather prevails but rains are still possible.

As this weather system prevails today, Batanes and Babuyan Group of Islands will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light rains. For the rest of the country including Metro Manila, a generally fair weather or partly cloudy to cloudy skies will be experienced except for isolated rain showers.

ASEAN 2017

Twenty heads of state, foreign media and delegates are in the Philippines to attend the 31st Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit and Related Summits this week. A generally fair weather is expected to prevail as related meetings continue in key locations including Metro Manila, Pampanga and Bulacan.

In an interview, PAGASA Weather Forecaster Chris Perez said that no weather disturbance is expected to affect the country within the next two days.

Rains are more likely to prevail due to the Low Pressure Area (LPA), last located in the vicinity of Maddela, Quirino. PAGASA Weather Forecaster Gener Quitlong noted that it has a slim chance of developing into a Tropical Depression within the day but once it reaches the West Philippine Sea, it may accumulate moisture and may still intensify as a “bagyo”.

Because the LPA is now traversing in between Northern and Central Luzon, it will continue to dump rains in several areas. Cloudy skies with moderate to occasionally heavy rains and thunderstorms are expected in Bicol Region and in the provinces of Cagayan, Apayao, Ilocos Norte, Batanes and the Babuyan Group of Islands. PAGASA alerts the residents against possible flooding and landslides.

Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon will experience cloudy skies with light to moderate rains with thunderstorms. Meanwhile, Visayas and Mindanao can expect partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms mostly in the afternoon or evening.

Gale warning is up in the northern seaboard of Northern Luzon, where rough to very rough sea condition is expected. Sea travel is risky for fishing boats and other small seacraft as wave height may reach up to 3.4 to 4.5 meters.

Have you noticed the slightly cooler weather mostly in the early morning? Quitlong added that northeasterly winds are already approaching. The ongoing transition period or shifting of wind patterns signifies that Habagat is no longer expected to affect the country. Hence, Amihan season is just around the corner!

Two weather systems will dump rains this weekend.

These include a Low Pressure Area (LPA) inside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) and the Southwest Monsoon affecting the western sections of Southern Luzon and Visayas.

At 3:00 AM today, the LPA was spotted at 40 kilometers north-northeast of Alabat, Quezon. PAGASA Weather Forecaster Samuel Duran said, the possibility that the LPA would develop into a tropical cyclone remains slim but it will still dampen Luzon as it approaches the landmass.

Today, areas in Luzon and Western Visayas will have cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms due to the LPA. These rains may trigger flash floods and landslides. Meanwhile, the remaining parts of Visayas and Mindanao will experience a generally fair weather except for chances of localized thunderstorms.

A weather disturbance is still being monitored by PAGASA within the Philippine premises. The Low Pressure Area (LPA) was last spotted at 500 kilometers east of Casiguran, Aurora. Despite its slim chance of developing into a Tropical Cyclone, its cloudiness extends over the archipelago.

The entire Visayas and Mindanao, as well Bicol Region and MIMAROPA (Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon and Palawan) will experience cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms. Meanwhile, Metro Manila and the rest of the country will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with chances of isolated rain showers or thunderstorms.

On the other hand, the Southwest Monsoon or Hanging Habagat is no longer dominant within the PAR, but this doesn’t mean that the Habagat season has ended. According to PAGASA Weather Forecaster Robert “Obet” Badrina, we are not in the transition period yet. Badrina noted that the Habagat can still return. The transition of wind patterns usually occurs in October. However, the public is still advised to monitor further development including the arrival of the Amihan season.

Autumnal Equinox

PAGASA’s Astronomical Diary shows that the Autumnal Equinox will occur on September 23, 2017 at around 4:03 AM. Derived from the latin word aequus, which means equal, and nox meaning night, the equinox refers to the time of the year where day and night are of approximately equal duration.

Badrina said this astronomical event will not have a significant effect on our weather aside from causing longer nights in the Philippines. Since longer nights equate to shorter exposure to sunlight, colder weather may gradually begin especially when Amihan becomes dominant.

LPA may develop into a Tropical Depression

A Low Pressure Area (LPA) still persists within the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR).

At 3:00 AM today, the LPA was at 95 kilometers north-northwest of Laoag City, Ilocos Norte. According to PAGASA Weather Forecaster Robert Badrina, the LPA may continue to intensify and develop into a Tropical Depression within the next 24 hours. If this happens, the country’s 11th Tropical Cyclone this year will be named “Kiko.”

As the LPA prevails, Ilocos Region, Batanes and the Babuyan group of Islands will have moderate to occasionally heavy rains, which may trigger flashfloods and landslides. Metro Manila, Cordillera, Central Luzon, the rest of Cagayan Valley, Mindoro, Cavite, and Batangas will experience cloudy skies with light to moderate rains and thunderstorms. The rest of Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies except for isolated light to occasionally heavy rains due to thunderstorms.

Question of the Day
As the “ber” months set in, Panahon TV Facebook follower Ryan Edward Sol asked: “Should we expect the Northeast Monsoon or Amihan to prevail next month?”

According to Badrina, the Southwest Monsoon or Habagat is still expected to prevail until October. Badrina noted that the Amihan begins in November and will be felt in Metro Manila starting December until February.

The Low Pressure Area (LPA) was last spotted at 555 kilometers east-northeast of Tuguegarao City. PAGASA Weather Forecaster Sheilla Reyes said it may cross Northern Luzon or Extreme Northern Luzon within the next 24 to 48 hours. In a separate interview, PAGASA Weather Forecaster Lori dela Cruz noted that the possibility for the said LPA to develop into a Tropical Cyclone is now slim.

However, it will still bring rains in different parts of the country as it nears landmass. Cloudy skies with light to moderate rains will be experienced in the regions of Cagayan Valley and Cordillera. Heavy rains, gusty winds and lightning may also occur during thunderstorms.

Same weather conditions will prevail in the provinces of Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union and Aurora. Meanwhile, Metro Manila and the rest of the country will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light rains and possible thunderstorms.

Another weather disturbance is being monitored outside the Philippine Area Responsibility (PAR). Severe Tropical Storm “Sonvu” was last located at 2,550 km east-northeast of Extreme Northern Luzon. Packing winds of 105 kph and gustiness of up to 129 kph, it moves north-northwest at 35 kph. With this movement, it is no longer expected to enter the PAR or affect any part of the country.

Potential LPA spotted

A possible weather disturbance was spotted in Mindanao today.

Based on an interview with PAGASA Weather Forecaster Meno Mendoza, the possible Low Pressure Area (LPA) is embedded along the Intertropical Convergence Zone or ITCZ.

“Ang nakapaloob dito sa ating Intertropical Convergence Zone ay mga maliliit na vortices ng Low Pressure Area at posible itong panggalingan nga ng sama ng panahon.” (Embedded within the Intertropical Convergence Zone are small vortices of Low Pressure Area, which may develop into a weather disturbance.)

Considered to be a breeding ground of weather disturbances, the ITCZ refers to the area where winds from the Northern and Southern Hemispheres meet and create interaction. Meanwhile, vertices are mass of whirling air that may develop into weather disturbances.

Today, Mindanao and Eastern Visayas will continue to experience light to moderate rains and thunderstorms this Thursday. In the rest of the country including Metro Manila, partly cloudy to cloudy skies will prevail with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms.

A new weather disturbance was spotted outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR).

At 4:00 AM today, the Low Pressure Area (LPA) was located at 525 kilometers southeast of General Santos City. PAGASA Weather Forecaster Benison Estareja said that this weather disturbance is not expected to enter PAR. However, its advancing clouds are bringing rains in some parts of Mindanao.

Cloudy skies with light to moderate rains and isolated thunderstorms are expected in the regions of Davao, Soccsksargen, ARMM and the Zamboanga peninsula.

Meanwhile, the extended part of High Pressure Area is bringing generally fair weather in Luzon, Visayas and the rest of Mindanao. Partly cloudy to cloudy skies will prevail only with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms mostly in the afternoon or evening.
