welcome
This 2015, we experienced fewer but enhanced Tropical Cyclones. A deciding factor is the strong El Niño, which continues to prevails throughout the world. But as we welcome the new year, here’s what we can expect, weather-wise.
According to PAGASA, the Amihan or Northeast Monsoon will prevail, bringing cold weather and light rains over Cagayan Valley and the province of Aurora. Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon will continue to have good weather conditions with chances of isolated light rains. Meanwhile, in Visayas and Mindanao, generally fair weather will be experienced, with possible localized thunderstorms in most parts of the eastern section due to the easterly wave.

For those who are still having their vacation out of town, you can still enjoy sightseeing as there will be NO bagyo on New Year’s Day.

In line with this, an average of 18-21 bagyo will be experienced this 2016. Here’s the lists of names of the possible bagyo.
bagyo

Because of thesStrong El Niño, we might be experiencing fewer than the normal average number of bagyo. But if there will be more than 25, an auxiliary list from PAGASA will be released.

According to PAGASA, a significant drop in temperature was recorded yesterday. In Quezon City, the lowest temperature since the start of the Amihan season was at 20 degrees Celsius.

Authorities temporarily closed the Mt. Pulag Adventure Park as freezing (below zero degree Celsius) temperature was recorded on Christmas Day. Mt. Pulag is a popular destination for adventure seekers in between the province of Benguet, Ifugao and Nueva Vizcaya.

PAGASA Weather Forecaster Benison Estareja said colder temperatures will continue until the end of 2015. Watch the full interview here:

Today, residents in Eastern Visayas, Davao Region, Caraga and Northern Mindanao are advised against light to moderate rain showers.

In Luzon, Cagayan Valley will have cloudy skies with light rains, while Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon will have a lower chance of rain showers today.

Moreover, good weather will prevail in the rest of the country.

The Trough of Low Pressure Area (LPA) outside PAR will bring light to moderate rains and isolated thunderstorms over the provinces of Sarangani, South Cotabato and Davao del Sur. Meanwhile, cold weather coupled with light rains is expected in Batanes and the islands of Calayan and Babuyan as the Northeast Monsoon or the Amihan continues to affect the extreme Northern Luzon. Fair weather with a chance of isolated light rains is expected in Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon. The rest of the country will enjoy fair weather conditions.

5AM

According to PAGASA Weather Forecaster Buddy Javier, as of 2 AM today, the Low Pressure Area (LPA) was located at 1,700 kms. east of Mindanao. Said LPA might enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) tonight or tomorrow morning. It might intensify in the coming hours as a Tropical Cyclone as it enters our boundary. There is a big chance that it will make its landfall in the Bicol Region or Eastern Visayas, though there is still the possibility of recurvature.

As the Northeast Monsoon or Amihan prevails in Northern Luzon, bringing moderately cold weather and light rains over Metro Manila and the regions of Cagayan valley, Ilocos and CORDILLERA. Meanwhile the Tail-end of a Cold Front will bring light to moderate rains over Central Luzon and the provinces of Quezon. As for the rest of our country, fair weather condition is expected.

The Philippine weather bureau PAGASA said, the northeast monsoon (locally known as amihan) has only just begun reaching the extreme Northern Luzon.

Meteorologist Aldczar Aurelio explains that it’s only t the start of the northeast monsoon or amihan season, still with the presence of the El Nino.

Eventually, the northeast monsoon will be experienced in the metro in the coming months. It usually peaks during January and February, but with the effect of El Nino, Aurelio said this season will be slightly warmer compared to last year.

The lowest temperature last season was 9 degrees Celsius, and was recorded at Baguio City on February 10, 2015.

Today, amihan will bring light rains in Batanes, Calayan and the Babuyan Group of Islands, while the Bicol Region, Eastern and Central Visayas, CARAGA, Northern Mindanao, Davao Region, Zamboanga Peninsula and the province of Quezon will have cloudy skies with light to moderate rains brought by easterlies.

Despite the warm air of El Niño, colder days are expected in the coming weeks.

According to PAGASA, the country is currently in the transition period. But what does this mean?

Transition period is a phase where masses of cold and dry air and warm, humid air meet. This point is called the frontal system, which normally brings rain showers.
PAGASA Weather Forecaster Chris Perez states that the cold front is usually the precursor of the amihan or northeast monsoon. When the tail end of a cold front affects Luzon or Visayas areas, this means that the northeast monsoon is slowly affecting the Extreme Northern Luzon, and will eventually move southward.

The onset of northeast monsoon will happen somewhere between the last week of October and the first week of November, and will peak in the month of either January or February.

Amihan is responsible for lower temperatures, characterized by cold and dry air coming from Mainland China. During amihan season, cirrus clouds dominate the sky, bringing good weather. Compared to the southwest monsoon season, fewer thunderstorms are likely to happen during this season.

Last year, the onset of amihan was declared on October 16, 2014.
